Newspapers are a thing of the past in my eyes, lets be honest there just sold to an ageing population. Social news has delivered the killer blow to print news, it’s simply not up to date quick enough. There is however scope for some unique papers to survive but in the next 30 years most will be dead and buried.
Even my own ways have changed in recent years due to advances in technology. The Star newspaper was a must every morning before i set off on my way to work. Along comes the IPhone and the Daily Star is down a regular customer. I just felt “why would I want to buy a paper on yesterdays news when I have today’s news in my hand”!! I’m sure this is the problem facing the print media with so many consumers.
Accessing social news websites has become so easy, with most sites now having an app available to download. My favored site is thejournal, which is Ireland’s most popular social news website. Similar sites that are popular with guys like myself are Joe.ie and the score.ie. Twitter is brilliant for following these sites through your feed as their stories are uploaded regularly. Reddit is a great site to see the ranking of journal pieces around many sites.
Social media has change marketing of products forever and brought it to a whole new level. In the years gone by marketers had to find who there customers where and then try to a find to market them. Now through the detail analytics that is collected online through our online footprint markets know who has an interest in their products and where to find us. Them ads that follow us around are just a remember of how advance these marketing tools are.
Platforms across social media are now so advanced in there skills to track the right customer down for a business it has become a multi billion dollar business. Google page rank is just an example that is been used daily by businesses as it’s been reported Google rakes in close to €100 million a day. This is obviously a huge figure but where was this money been spent before Google came along!!
Social media has helped bring more business into the international marketplace through the advantage of the internet being a worldwide marketplace. Businesses can now form a strategic plan which can change from country to country. One thing that spring to mind is the affect of viral ads that are becoming an objectives of marketing teams as this brings some huge brand recognition. Cadbury’s have recently had an video advert with John Giles and Eamon Dunphy go viral through social media which resulted in more free advertising on radio station programmes.
Marketers also have an avenue to research how their competitors are acting online through their social media channels. Researching these channels can show your competitors social media strategies .Following on from this companies can review if their own strategies are achieving the same level of results in terms of engagement. Social media marketing tools are there for every one to use but it about the person who delivers the strategy to deliver an successful outcome. Ultimately social media is a very cheap tool to use to improve on your business results. However time ,effort and imagination is something that will need to be set out from the start by managers.
Well there is a lot to say from a mature student who didn’t know what to expect from a life of education. It had been a long 12 years since those boring days of Dunshaughlin Community College. Having never been fond of school, it had always a race to get out and into the workforce. What a shock that was to a young boy who thought he knew it all but hey weren’t we all the same eh.
On came the recession and the idea of looking for a new career as the construction industry had disappeared before our very eyes. I’ll have to be honest it’s probably the best thing that happened to me in a way, it gave me an excuse to redirect my career. Maynooth University was my only choice in my CAO application and thankfully I got accepted.
So off I go to Maynooth not knowing how to study or anything like that but it had to be given a lash. Luckily when I first sat down for a talk for mature students I sat beside a girl and got talking straight away . Thankfully we are still very good friends today even though were not even studying the same modules. Following on from that I’ve got friendly with most people in my class and always try to be as friendly to people as they are to me.
Group projects were the first assignments set out for students during first year and that is an experience like no other. Meeting group members that you didn’t know from adam was challenging, members were so diverse as some were hard workers, lazy, shy, or just never showed up. However there is a skill you develop over time to cope with these different types of people. It certainty put pressure on individuals to get out of your comfort zone. Now been a level headed third year student this is something that is not so much a worry to you as you have dealt with all types of people in these situation previously. Furthermore it’s given me the experience of team work before going out to the workplace.
The social scene of Maynooth isn’t been something I’ve seen much of, probably because of been a wee bit older than the younger students here. However it is worth noting Maynooth is a college with a large mature student population and the two groups mix pretty well. This is the main reason I enjoy my time at Maynooth as everyone gets on with each other no matter the age difference and this makes for a pretty engaging environment. Overall my time at Maynooth has been a pleasant experience as it’s given me the confidence to realise my true potential.
So I decided my technology fast would start on a Saturday as it wouldn’t affect too much with my college work. Deciding that I would cut my ties with all technology bar phone calls for 24 hours was the task I set myself. Living without your phone call is just not viable really especially when I have a young kid, however it still was no plain sailing. When I woke up that morning I swithed my mobile data and wifi of on my phone and it was ok till I sat down and ate my breakie. OMG what else is there to do while ateing the cereal in this day and age I said, hardly going to switch on Ireland AM on a Saturday. I guess you just have to talk to yourself or switch on the radio. This is what we did in the old days I guess, the radio is a good source of news but I guess it don’t give you the local gossip you get from social media outlets.
Through the day it did dawn on me that I used my phone for so many things such as checking my bank balance to opening hours of shops or directions on how to get to somewhere. I do have an addition withrefreshing the Journal app quite regularly and this was something that I felt I was missing straight away. While bringing my daughter to activities I usually play around online but this time I actually had to watch, which is probably what u should have been doing all along. It also is a thing of repetitiveness as I have a routine of checking on the same website daily and never venture too much from them and if I do it’s probably linked back to one of those sites.
The laptop wasn’t really having an affect on me as it wasn’t a college day and that’s usually when a laptop or desktop is usually required for me personally. Email usually comes in hourly and it was weird not having the vibrating tone of your email going off during the day. The next morning was blocked up with emails to read as I have always to read all the emails I receive, I hate when there is a number on the email app saying you have so many to read. While I do my few bets in the bookies on a Saturday in the local bookmaking shop I usually get all the up to date information on my phone and I have to say I found that very odd. It just wasn’t the same experience putting on bets with the phone for all the detailed information.
On conclusion I found this a very odd experience as it really made me think of other way of sourcing information and finding things to do to stimulate my mind. I guess it’s like everything in life you don’t really appreciate something until it’s gone. 24 hours is as far as it went and I’ll be in no hurry to do it again !!!
Well it’s back Big Time Boxing in the 3 Arena , not since Bernard Dunne’s loss in his last fight to Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym has boxing being staged at the former Point Depot. Matt Macklin puts his world title credentials on the line against foreign traveller Jorge Sebastian Heiland. Mack the knife has a lot on the line as this fight could push him closer to a world title fight with fellow Irish man Andy lee( assuming Lee wins his world title fight next month). That is the huge prize on offer to Macklin as he isn’t getting any younger and he can’t afford any more slipups. Macklin should prove to much for this opponent as he is vastly more experienced and is back in Gallagher’s gym in Birmingham where he’s had huge success before. My prediction is Macklin on point by 8 rounds as Heiland is a tough nut and hasn’t been stopped previously.
Looking through the rest of the bill there are a few cracking fights to bring the roof off the 3 arena and i’m certain Fitzy v Spike bout will have a great atmosphere due to the Dublin/Cork rivalry. Knowing both boxers from their amateur days I think Fitzy might just prove too much for spike as he is just such a tough cookie. Fitzy might just ware down spike over the 10 rounds as I feel he is naturally a bigger man. This should also go the distance , however it’s going be a razor thin decision with Fitzy getting the nod but anything is possible in this fight.
Jono Carroll an unbeaten young prospect from the same village as myself in Dunshaughlin is taking a huge gamble taking on Declan Geraghty in only his third fight. Deco also an unbeaten prospect from my old amateur club in Crumlin but boxing via MGM Marbella gym in Spain. Two very different styles clash here with Jono having a inside style of fighting and Deco who relies heavlly on his reflexs, this is all about who style wins out. This fight is going to be a lot closer than people think and I’m still waiting on the bookies odds for this fight as I have a feeling there could be a huge upset on the cards. Jono is underestimated by many however has some great skills and has a decent dig on him while he is solid on the weight. Deco has been moving up through the weights in recent years. If Jono can get in close and catch Deco some big body shots early on to slow him down , that might just take away the movement from Geraghty. So to sum up my prediction I think Jono might just get the victory in a very tight fight.
Changes in technology have altered the way I live a huge amount in just the past few years, through one device my Iphone. Crazy as it may seem before my Iphone came along the Irish Daily Star was my major source of media during workdays. Nowadays I only ever purchase a newspaper during Cheltenham week or if I know someone local who’s up in court, sure we all buy it that week. So I guess my media exposure to printed press is pretty low compared to the online media source journal.ie, which is something I’m addicted too. While holidaying in Thailand during the summer myself and my mate would get to a Wi-Fi zone, refresh all the journal stories and catch up on what’s going down in the emerald isle.
Exposure to social media was something I didn’t think was such an issue for me, that’s coming from a buck who learned how to typewrite at school. I guess it’s changed dramatically in recent years especially now I’m back in college and using technology continuously. Sure I’ve even been a bit reluctant to use some platforms as I thought “come on there a bit stupid” but hey after a while you come around. Following on, I’m probably more of a lurker on Facebook and retweeter on Twitter. Twitter is my preferred app as there more informative data there, rather than on the facebook where you’ll only see some girl posting about her kids AGAIN. We all know you have kids!!, you told us for the last 200 days continuously rant over.
Ray “I played rugby” Darcy is my radio man along with all the Sile’s on the Livline . I just can’t get enough of whining auld one’s “isn’t it terrible Joe”. Poor auld Joe afraid of his life to say anything bad about anyone, entertaining stuff all the same. Radio is constantly on in the car and when I’m at work, so it all depends on where I am on a week to week basis. That really defines how much the amount I’m exposed to on a regular basis.
I’m a Television man every time I’ve a bit of time to myself; Peaky Blinders is the top show at the moment although LoveHate has been the bomb this season. Averaging about 3 hours a day would average for me during the week but a whole lot more the weekends as the horse racing gets most of my television exposure. There is however the auld problem of the Iphone being in my hand during tv time as I flick back to it during the ad breaks, this must be a problem for advertising company if we’re all picking up our phones during the ad breaks.
Journalism has seen huge changes over recent years as it comes in all formats and from a variety of places. Live tweets from disaster zones is the first one to spring to mind, as live updates are telling the story of what’s happening on the ground. .
Live updates from the Haiti earthquake where some of the first type of citizen journalism episodes to spring to mind , along with the live tweets of locals wondering what’s the hell was happening in the town of Abbottabad, Pakistan on the night of the raid on Osama bin laden compound.
These updates are priceless and captured the moment of the event in real-time. Imagine the citizen journalism updates from the twin towers disaster , some however might argue this could have caused people not to leave the scene as quick and in turn could have resulted in more deaths. There certainly would be a ton more evidence of the disaster available today.
A range of issues also exist with this type of journalism, such examples include terrorists use the platform to promote their killings on-line. There appears to be no way of stopping the uploading of these barbaric killings,as they spread across millions of social media platforms in seconds without any consideration given to victims families. Like previous generations, these acts required terrorist groups to use mainstream media.
This topic also makes me wonder, how the I.R.A. would have used this type of journalism? RTE played a huge role on bringing the I.R.A peacefire to a reality, as the acted as an intermediary between themselves and the governments of the day. It makes me wonder would RTE have played such a major role if citizen journalism was part of media back then!!
Goals been recorded in stadiums and then uploaded to social media platforms within seconds is commonplace, so who needs Sky Sports!! Maybe I’ll just unsubscribe from Sky Sports altogether however these type of practices has the premier league worried about future television contracts. http://rs21.org.uk/2014/09/17/premier-league-crackdown/.
Ultimately I do feel that this type of media is of great benefit to myself when I’m out and about. At least now it saving me a few quid on not having to buy the star every morning. Nowadays one has the luxury of following certain tweeters on-line that are constantly updating how events are progressing in real time. Boxing as an example has certain popular citizen journalists of whom I follow on twitter, for the reason that they will are normally be in attendance at big fight nights and can keep me updated regularly on how bouts are been contested throughout the night.
Overall I feel citizen journalism is a positive but there will always be some people not reporting truthful and verified information, some would say “sure ain’t mainstream journalism full of bullshit too”.
